The Singapore lsmgo-lsfo spread doubled in two weeks as demand for low-sulphur oil grew further

Foreship, a shipbuilding and Marine engineering consultancy, says the number of inquiries about how to install exhaust cleaning systems in a short period of time is at an all-time high.

The increase in demand for desulfurization tanks is due to concerns in emerging markets about the quality and availability of fuel with 0.5% sulfur content, as well as the increased cost of compliant fuel. Ship operators have to use compliant fuel in order to meet the international maritime organization's 2020 sulfur limit, which comes into effect on January 1, 2020

The consultancy added that desulphurisation towers were becoming increasingly popular because of the unanticipated black carbon emissions associated with low-sulphur fuels

On the other hand, the report says that many shipowners who choose to install desulfurization towers on their ships have had a relatively smooth transition in coping with the change in sulfur restrictions

Forship Olli Somerkallio, head of the waste gas cleaning system project, said the restrictions had caught many people off guard when shipowners on the market who had been considering the benefits of switching to desulphurisation towers were wondering how long it would take to install them on board

The uncertainty surrounding low sulphur fuel is prompting shipowners to reconsider their ability to make the right choice on the desulfurisation tower, so they receive an almost daily stream of inquiries about equipment assessments and installations

The latest figures from CRU, a consultancy, show that 3,756 ships have installed or ordered FGD towers by the end of 2020, with up to 15 per cent of ocean-going vessels to install them, and that figure is expected to rise to 20 by 2025
